Garage Floor
After the garage was trimmed and painted, the floors were as empty as they would ever be. I wasn't happy with the unfinished concrete. It was water absorbent and stained from use and lack of cleaning. I needed a better surface. I looked into epoxies and considered the Con-lux low solids product which I had used on the other parts of the basement, or something else. I called Sika, the manufacturer of such coatings. I told their technical people what the use was and they recommended Sikaguard 62, and for non-skid I could mix sand in the batch before applying. I then went up to Kenseal, the dealer and got into a discussion with them about the different application methods. They suggested using a colored sand and a clear coating to create a "ceramic carpet". They then directed me to Estes Sand in Totowa for the sand. In the showroom they had samples of all colors and textures. I saw their coffee room floor and liked it right away. It was 80% red and 10% white., I would describe it as red with a white speckle.
To apply it, the epoxy was rolled on to the floor. While still wet, the sand was thrown on top. The next day the excess sand was vacuumed up and the floor was recoated with clear epoxy. I put 2 thin coats on top. The cost was very reasonable, about $1.25 per square foot.
The stuff was stinky, a good respirator is necessary.
