You can see the flue to the kitchen on the image below on the left.

The whole chimney cavity was offset because of the kitchen flue. Initially I thought that I could not use a Rumford Fireplace design for this reason.

 

You can see the chimney back here. After the fireplace was gone, the chimney and fireplace back was the only thing holding up 30 feet of stone chimney. A hand hammer and chisel carved the stone back to the outside wall. Going too far would break through and damage the structural integrity of the chimney. 

To access the 2nd floor, we had to remove a stud.

 

We stopped at the ceiling. I didn't want to go too far because of the uncertainty about the fireplace.

Already we went to the roof with the basement flue. I was expecting the rain to come in. I nailed a piece of plywood to the roof to deflect water coming from the roof above.
